Victor Wembanyama Sidelined With Ankle Injury, Spurs Confirm...

San Antonio Spurs rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama will miss at least two weeks after suffering a left ankle sprain during Friday night's game against the Denver Nuggets. The 7-foot-4 center rolled his ankle while contesting a rebound in the third quarter, immediately leaving the game and not returning.

The injury comes at a critical time for the Spurs, who are fighting for playoff positioning in the Western Conference. Wembanyama, the 2023 No. 1 overall pick, has been averaging 21.8 points, 10.4 rebounds and 3.2 blocks per game this season.

Team doctors confirmed the diagnosis Saturday after an MRI revealed a moderate sprain. "Victor's recovery will be day-to-day after the initial two-week period," Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich told reporters. "We won't rush him back."

The injury is trending nationally because Wembanyama has become must-watch television in his rookie season, drawing comparisons to legends like Tim Duncan and Kevin Durant. His absence could significantly impact the NBA playoff picture, with San Antonio currently holding the 6th seed in the West.

Fans expressed concern on social media after seeing Wembanyama limp to the locker room Friday night. The Spurs went on to lose the game 112-104 without their star rookie. Wembanyama tweeted Saturday: "Minor setback. Coming back stronger. Appreciate all the love."

This marks Wembanyama's first significant injury since entering the NBA. The French phenom had played in all 78 games prior to Friday's injury. The Spurs' next game is Monday against the Sacramento Kings, where they'll rely more heavily on veterans Devin Vassell and Keldon Johnson.

Sports medicine experts note that ankle sprains typically require 2-4 weeks of recovery time for basketball players. The Spurs have eight regular season games remaining, with playoff seeding potentially hanging in the balance during Wembanyama's absence.
