Tesla Model S Plaid Recalled Over Braking System Concerns
Tesla Model S Plaid Recalled Over Braking System Concerns...
Tesla has issued a recall for approximately 8,000 Model S Plaid vehicles in the U.S. due to potential braking system failures, according to a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) filing published Friday. The recall affects vehicles produced between 2021 and 2026 with specific software configurations that may cause sudden loss of regenerative braking.
The issue came to light after multiple drivers reported unexpected deceleration events, including at least three near-miss highway incidents documented in NHTSA complaints. Tesla will deploy an over-the-air software update to affected vehicles starting April 15 at no cost to owners.
This recall comes just weeks after Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced record Q1 2026 deliveries, with the Model S Plaid accounting for nearly 15% of U.S. luxury EV sales. The timing has sparked renewed scrutiny of Tesla's rapid production scaling and software-first approach to vehicle safety.
Consumer Reports has temporarily removed its "Recommended" rating for the Model S pending verification of the software fix. Tesla shares dipped 2.3% in pre-market trading following the recall announcement, though analysts note the financial impact appears limited given the relatively small number of affected vehicles.
The NHTSA investigation remains open as regulators evaluate whether similar issues may exist in other Tesla models. Owners of affected vehicles will receive notification letters by May 1, but can check recall status immediately via Tesla's mobile app or the NHTSA website using their VIN.
