Tesla Model 3 Prices Drop Again As EV Competition Heats Up...
Tesla has slashed prices for the Model 3 in the U.S. for the third time this year, sparking renewed interest in the electric sedan. The base rear-wheel-drive model now starts at $38,990, down from $40,240 in January, as Tesla faces growing pressure from rivals like Hyundai and Ford.
The latest price cut comes just weeks after federal EV tax credit eligibility changes took effect on April 1. Many Tesla models now qualify for the full $7,500 credit, making them more affordable than ever. Analysts say the moves reflect Tesla's strategy to maintain dominance in an increasingly crowded market.
Searches for "Tesla Model 3" surged 180% on Google Trends today as consumers reacted to the news. The vehicle remains America's best-selling EV, with over 200,000 units sold in 2025. However, newer competitors like the Hyundai Ioniq 6 and updated Chevrolet Bolt have been gaining market share.
Tesla showrooms reported increased foot traffic in major cities following the announcement. "We've seen twice as many test drive requests today compared to last week," said a sales manager at a Los Angeles dealership. The company is also offering 0.99% financing on select inventory vehicles through April.
The price reductions come amid softening demand for EVs industry-wide. Tesla delivered 386,000 vehicles globally in Q1 2026, missing analyst expectations. CEO Elon Musk has emphasized affordability as key to achieving the company's goal of 2 million annual deliveries.
Used Model 3 prices have also dropped significantly, with 2021 models now selling for under $25,000 in some markets. This has opened the EV market to more budget-conscious buyers, though some early adopters have expressed frustration over rapid depreciation.
Industry experts predict further price adjustments as battery costs continue to decline. "We're entering the phase where EVs become truly mass-market," said AutoPacific analyst Robby DeGraff. "Tesla's moves today will force other manufacturers to respond."
The Model 3 refresh expected later this year could bring additional changes, including rumored hardware upgrades and new color options. For now, the price cuts have reignited consumer interest in what remains Tesla's most accessible vehicle.
