Santa Rosa County Faces Emergency After Major Flooding...

Santa Rosa County, Florida, has declared a state of emergency after torrential rains caused severe flooding, displacing hundreds of residents and damaging critical infrastructure. The county, located in the Florida Panhandle, saw over 15 inches of rain in 48 hours, overwhelming drainage systems and forcing road closures.

Local officials confirmed at least 200 homes were inundated, with emergency crews conducting water rescues in Milton, Gulf Breeze, and Navarre. Schools and government offices remain closed as crews assess damage. The National Weather Service issued flash flood warnings through Tuesday, urging residents to avoid travel.

This disaster follows a stalled weather system that has battered the Gulf Coast since Friday. Santa Rosa County is trending nationally as images of submerged neighborhoods circulate on social media. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis activated state emergency resources Sunday night.

Residents are reporting waist-high water in some areas, with major highways like U.S. Route 90 partially underwater. Power outages affect approximately 5,000 customers, according to Gulf Power. The American Red Cross has opened two shelters for displaced families.

The flooding comes just three years after Hurricane Sally caused similar devastation in the region. Local officials warn recovery could take weeks, with more rain forecast later this week. FEMA representatives are expected to arrive Monday to assess federal aid eligibility.

Santa Rosa County Sheriff Bob Johnson urged caution, noting multiple water rescue calls overnight. "This isn't typical seasonal flooding - we're seeing historic levels," Johnson told reporters. The county last saw comparable flooding during 2014's historic rainfall event.

Business owners along the Blackwater River are bracing for additional damage as water levels continue rising. The Santa Rosa County Commission will hold an emergency meeting Monday afternoon to discuss response efforts and potential curfews for affected areas.
