Patrick Warns Talarico Could Win Texas House Race...
Texas Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick issued a stark warning to Republicans on Monday, suggesting Democrat James Talarico could win a key Texas House seat in November. The rare admission from a top GOP leader has sparked concerns among conservatives about shifting political tides in the state.
Patrick's comments came during a Republican fundraiser in Austin, where he urged donors to rally behind GOP candidate Caroline Harris. "We cannot take this race for granted," Patrick said, according to attendees. "Talarico is a serious threat."
The race for House District 52, covering parts of Williamson County north of Austin, has gained national attention as Democrats target Texas suburbs. Talarico, a former state representative who lost his seat in 2022 redistricting, is running on education funding and healthcare expansion.
Recent internal polling reportedly shows a tight race, though no public surveys have been released. The district voted for both Donald Trump in 2020 and Democrat Beto O'Rourke in 2018, making it a true swing seat.
Political analysts note the warning reflects growing Democratic momentum in Texas suburbs. "When Dan Patrick sounds the alarm, Republicans listen," said University of Houston political scientist Brandon Rottinghaus. "This suggests they're seeing troubling data."
The Texas House currently has an 86-64 Republican majority. Democrats need to flip just nine seats to break the GOP's 20-year hold on the chamber. A Talarico victory would mark a significant step toward that goal.
Harris, the Republican nominee, has focused on property tax cuts and border security. The former legislative staffer has raised over $1.2 million since entering the race last year.
Early voting begins October 21 for the November 5 election. Both parties are expected to pour resources into the race, which could become one of the most expensive state legislative contests in Texas history.
