Major Cough Drop Recall Issued Over Contamination Concerns...
A nationwide recall of cough drops has been issued after testing revealed potential bacterial contamination in multiple batches. The affected products, sold under the brands ThroatEase and SoothRx, were distributed to major retailers including CVS, Walgreens, and Walmart across all 50 states.
The FDA announced the voluntary recall late Monday after routine sampling detected traces of Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc), bacteria that can cause serious respiratory infections. Consumers are urged to check lot numbers on packages purchased between January and March 2026.
At least 12 reports of illness have been potentially linked to the contaminated products, according to CDC data. Symptoms include persistent coughing, fever, and difficulty breathing - particularly dangerous for immunocompromised individuals.
"We're working closely with manufacturers to identify the source of contamination," said FDA Commissioner Dr. Patricia Hart in a statement. The recall affects approximately 2.3 million units of cherry and honey-lemon flavored lozenges.
Major pharmacy chains have begun pulling products from shelves, but officials warn some may still be in consumer medicine cabinets. The recall comes during peak allergy season when cough drop usage typically spikes across the U.S.
Manufacturer PharmaRelief stated it has halted production at its Ohio facility pending investigation. Consumers can return affected products for full refunds or contact 1-800-HEALTH-FDA for more information.
This marks the largest cough drop recall since 2019, when menthol lozenges were pulled for containing undeclared milk ingredients. Health experts recommend checking the FDA's website for updated lot numbers and disposal instructions.
