Longtime ESPN Analyst Mark Jones Announces Departure...

ESPN announced Monday that veteran play-by-play commentator Mark Jones is leaving the network after 30 years. The news comes as Jones prepares to join NBC Sports, where he will reportedly lead NBA and Notre Dame football coverage.

Jones confirmed his departure in a social media post, calling ESPN "home" while expressing excitement for his next chapter. His final assignment will be Game 1 of the NBA Finals in June. The move follows recent high-profile exits from ESPN, including Jeff Van Gundy and Jalen Rose.

Fans and colleagues flooded social media with tributes to Jones, known for his signature "Bang!" call on big shots. His versatility across NBA, college basketball and football made him one of ESPN's most recognizable voices. The network hasn't named his replacement for NBA broadcasts.

The timing coincides with ESPN's broader talent reshuffling amid parent company Disney's cost-cutting measures. Industry analysts note NBC's aggressive sports media push, having recently secured NBA rights starting in 2025. Jones' move continues the migration of top broadcasters to networks with live game rights.

Jones joined ESPN in 1996 after local radio work in Sacramento. He became a staple of ABC's Saturday Night Football and called multiple NBA Finals alongside analysts like Doris Burke. His departure leaves Mike Breen as ESPN's sole remaining lead NBA play-by-play voice.

ESPN President Jimmy Pitaro issued a statement thanking Jones for his "tremendous contributions." The network plans to honor him during this year's NBA playoffs. Jones' final ESPN broadcast will mark the end of an era for one of sports television's most consistent voices.
