Blazers Fire Head Coach After Disappointing Season...

The Portland Trail Blazers have parted ways with head coach Chauncey Billups after three seasons, the team announced Thursday. The move comes following a 27-55 season that left Portland near the bottom of the Western Conference standings.

Billups, a former NBA Finals MVP as a player, compiled a 81-165 record since taking over in 2021. The Blazers struggled with injuries to star guard Damian Lillard before his trade to Milwaukee last offseason, then failed to develop young talent around new franchise cornerstone Scoot Henderson.

The decision comes as no surprise to NBA analysts. Portland's front office had signaled changes were coming after the team's worst record since 2005-06. General Manager Joe Cronin said the organization needs "a new voice" to lead its rebuilding effort.

Fan reaction has been mixed across social media. Some praised Billups' player development work, while others criticized his defensive schemes that ranked among the league's worst all three seasons. The Blazers allowed 118.9 points per game this year, third-worst in the NBA.

Potential replacements already circulating include former Lakers coach Darvin Ham and current Bucks assistant Charles Lee. The Blazers join the Lakers, Wizards and Hornets as teams with coaching vacancies this offseason.

The timing coincides with Portland preparing for next month's NBA Draft Lottery, where they have a 13.2% chance at the No. 1 pick. A new coach will help shape the team's direction whether they land projected top pick Alexandre Sarr or build around Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe.

This marks the Blazers' first coaching search since 2021. Team owner Jody Allen has historically given front offices patience with rebuilds, but the organization clearly felt change was necessary after missing the playoffs three straight years.
