Australian Idol 2026 Sparks US Interest As Winner Announced...
The 2026 season of Australian Idol has unexpectedly trended in the U.S. after Sydney singer Mia Thompson, 19, won the competition in a dramatic finale last night. American viewers took to social media to praise Thompson’s powerhouse vocals, drawing comparisons to past American Idol winners like Kelly Clarkson and Carrie Underwood.
The surge in U.S. interest comes as clips of Thompson’s performances went viral on TikTok and X (formerly Twitter). Many American fans expressed surprise at the show’s high production value and talent pool, with some calling for a similar revival of American Idol, which last aired new episodes in 2023.
Thompson, a former busker from Bondi Beach, won with a rendition of Adele’s "Rolling in the Deep" during Sunday’s live finale. Judges Harry Connick Jr., Meghan Trainor, and Keith Urban praised her as "one of the most authentic voices" in the show’s history. The finale drew 2.1 million Australian viewers, a record for the rebooted series.
U.S. audiences also tuned in via streaming platforms, including YouTube TV and Hulu, where the season was available shortly after airing. Australian broadcaster Seven Network confirmed international viewership spiked by 40% compared to last year’s season, with the U.S. accounting for the largest share.
Music industry analysts suggest the crossover appeal reflects growing global interest in international talent competitions. "Shows like Australian Idol are filling a gap left by American Idol’s hiatus," said Billboard’s senior editor, Lyndsey Havens. "American audiences are clearly hungry for this format."
Thompson’s victory comes with a recording contract with Sony Music Australia. Her debut single, "Brave Enough," is set for release March 15 and is already climbing iTunes pre-order charts in both Australia and the U.S.
